Pem Dorjee popularly known as Neelu was born on 12th of July, 1958 at Gangtok to Mrs. & Mr. Gyampu T. Chingapa. He did his early schooling in Scotish University Missions Institute in Kalimpong, an Institute known for being a nursery for promising footballers of the region. He completed his schooling from the Pelling Senior Secondary School in West Sikkim.

 

 

 

He was a member of the first Sikkimese Team to play as a State in the National Championships held at Patna in 1976. Thereafter he represented Sikkim regularly. In 1979, at the National Championships held in Coimbatore, he came into prominence for his sterling performance and became much sought after by the major clubs of the country.

Pem Dorjee represented the famous Mohammadan Sporting Club of Calcutta for a number of seasons from 1980 and was chosen to represent India in the pre-Olympic tournament held in 1982 at Malaysia. He had the singular distinction of being the first Sikkimese to captain the National Team then. He also played in the Nehru Gold Cup in the year 1983, 1984-85 and 1988, the President Cup at Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1983-84 and 1987, the Asia Cup in 1984 and SAF in 1987.

His contribution to Sikkim rests, not only in the fame he attained as an international level sports person but also in enabling the State team to match the prowess of the best teams in the country. Under his leadership and inspiration Sikkim has defeated such giant clubs as Mohun Bagan and Mohammadan Sporting and large State like Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana. He has been an inspiration for coming generations of footballers and has set an example through his exemplary sportsman spirit.

In his career as a footballer, he played for many clubs like Mahendra Club of Kathmandu, Kaliks Sporting Team and Shree Paanch Mahendra Police Club. In recognition of his outstanding and contribution to the cause of football in the State and country, he was posthumously conferred the Roll of Honour by the State Government in 2002.
