For the sports lovers of this small Himalayan State 1982 was a memorable year as in this year one of Sikkim's gallant sons, Jaslal Pradhan, did pride to all of us by bagging the Gold Medal in boxing in the Ninth Asian Games held at Seoul, South Korea. Although he had represented the country from Services yet the fact remains that Jaslal Pradhan was the son of Sikkim.

 

 

 

OLYMPIAN JASLAL PRADHAN was born on 24th April 1957 to Mrs. & Mr. Man Bahadur Pradhan at Khamdong, East Sikkim. After passing his matriculation (Class X) examination, he acquired the Army Graduation and Sports Diploma.

 

International Achievements

 
His international achievements included:

Gold medal in the IX Asian Boxing Championship at South Korea (Seoul) in 1982.

A bronze medal in Mini Commonwealth Game at Australia (Brisbane) in 1981

Participated in VIIIth Kings cup at Thailand, Bangkok in 1982,

Participated in XXIII Olympic Game at Los Angeles (USA) in 1984,

Participated in XI Asian Boxing championship at Japan (Okinawa) in 1993 and USSR international boxing.

 

National Achievements

 
Gold medal in Junior National Boxing championship held at Hyderabad in 1975.

Gold medal in  Senior National Boxing Championship held at Tamil Nadu in 1976.

Gold medal in Senior National Boxing Championship held at Jamshedpur in 1981.

Gold medal in Senior National Boxing Championship held at Delhi, Bombay.

Won double gold medals in Senior National Boxing Championship in 1981-83 and was even declared the Best Boxer of the country.

In 1983, he was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award.

 

 Coaching Achievements

 
The following are his coaching achievements:-

Detailed as a Coach for the National Coaching Camp during 1990 (Asian Game).

Detailed as Services Coach in 1992.

Detailed as Coach 1st Uzbakistan Independence Cup 1993 held at Taskent (Uzbekistan).

Detailed as Coach Seoul Cup International Boxing Championship 1995 held at South Korea (Seoul).

Detailed as Coach for the Indian Team of YMCA 1st International Boxing Tournament 1995 held at New Delhi - his wards won four Gold Medal, Five Silver and Seven Bronze Medal.

Detailed as Coach for the Training Camp 1994 Asian Game Boxer won Four Bronze Medal. 1994 World Cup Boxing Championship at Bangkok, Thailand - his wards won One Bronze Medal.

9th SAF Game 1995 held at Madras (India) participated as a Coach Boxer, his wards won 10 Gold Medal and 2 Silver Medal.

Mayours Cup Boxing Championship 1996 held at Philipine CEBU CITY II Olympic Qualified Round - two boxers selected for Atlanta (USA)

Jaslal Pradhan is prsently serving as the State Coach (Boxing) and the difference he has made in this field in Sikkim can be most visible in the interest youngsters are showing in this discipline and the numerous medals they have been winning in different boxing championships in the country.
