The State Department of Mines & Geology is actively engaged in geo-environmental appraisal, geo-technical and geological study of parts of the State. Recently completed study of Uttarey Lake {West Sikkim) area being considered for development into a tourist spot.

Geo-technical studies :
As desired by the Hon’ble High Court of Sikkim, Gyalshing Sub-division (West Sikkim) is being studied geologically for future planning and development. The State Department of Mines & Geology have completed study of many landslide prone and landslide affected areas in the past and more such studies are being planned for the future.

Trans-Himalayan Railway :

Feasibility of an 75 km long Broad Gauge Trans Himalayan Railway line linking New Jalpaiguri (West Bengal) with Rorathang (East Sikkim) through a 28 km long underground tunnel between Chhota Mangzing in Bagrakot and Rorathang is a distinct possibility. Report concerning the same is under active consideration of the Central and State Governments.

Utilization of Limestone/Dolomite of State :

Pilot dimension rock cutting unit and pilot lime making unit have been set up in the State to assess the feasibility of setting up of commercial lime plant and dimension rock cutting plant in the State.

Exploitation of Mineral Deposit by Sikkim Mining Corporation

Bhotang deposit :

The Bhotang deposit of Copper, Zinc and Lead ore at Rangpo, East Sikkim, being mined by Sikkim Mining Corporation, a joint sector undertaking of Government of Sikkim and Government of India in the ownership ratio of 51: 49 percent with initial authorized capital of Rs. 1.00 Crore.

The authorized Capital has been increased in two phases and is presently kept at Rs. 10.00 crore. This was done to revitalize and turnaround the corporation by capital restructuring.

The extraction of ore was started in around 1967 and is still continuing. The minerals mined are Copper} Lead and Zinc. The ore is treated to make concentrates and sold to Hindustan Zinc Ltd. and Hindustan Copper Ltd.

The ore being of multi-metal in nature, cost of beneficiation is high.

The Corporation presently employs 123 numbers of regular employees. The daily production of ore is around 60 to 70 MT.

Pacheykhani Copper Deposit :

The Sikkim Mining Corporation started exploiting the Lower Pacheykhani Copper deposit to supplement its production at Bhotang mine in 1997 as the ore is rich in Copper. Ore produced from Pacheykhani Mine would increase the capacity utilization of Concentrator plant at Bhotang Mine at Sikkim Mining Corporation, Rangpo.

With a view to explore the deposit occurring in the Upper Pacheykhani area the Mineral Exploration Corporation, Nagpur has been entrusted for detailed exploration of the deposit and report on feasibility of exploitation.

Dikchu Copper-Zinc Deposit :

Dikchu Copper-Zinc deposit was explored in detail by the MECL a decade back. The average grade of Copper is 2.70 % and Zinc 0.87 %. The total deposit is 4. 77 lakh tonnes. The exploitation could not be taken up till date due to financial constraints. However, the government has now decided to go ahead with the project and for which proposal for granting Mining lease to Sikkim Mining Corporation is under process.
